At least 14 pupils died and 39 others seriously injured following a stampede at Kakamega Primary School, Monday the 3rd. Some of the students said that the incident occurred when one of the pupils who was leading the others downstairs tried to block the others mid-way along the staircase on the third floor, in a playful manner. The rest started pushing to force their way downstairs and tumbled upon each other in the process.
The incident left one pupil admitted to Kakamega Referral Hospital`s Intensive Care Unit, two in a critical condition and 39 others nursing injuries. A somber mood engulfed the hospital where nurses and clinical officers worked overtime to attend to the injured children. Some of the injured children were rushed to Nala Nursing and Maternity Hospital where one pupil was pronounced dead upon arrival. Police and medics at the Kakamega Referral Hospital had a rough time trying to contain the parents and relatives who had not been able to ascertain the whereabouts of their children.
Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya arrived at the hospital in the morning to asses the situation. Senator Cleophas Malala, Lurambi Mp Titus Khamala, and several MCAs also visited the injured pupils at the hospital.
