Residents of Muhoroni are panicking after a swarm of desert locusts invaded the area.
Muhoroni deputy county commissioner Erick Wanyonyi said the locusts were spotted at Kamarawa village, Wang’aya One Sublocation of Miwani Division. He said he has informed the county Commissioner Susan Waweru and other county officials and relevant action is expected to take place.
He called for urgent intervention to eliminate the locusts as Muhoroni area is a major county’s food provider to the residents.
Muhoroni is a cane growing area, home to three state-owned sugar factories, Chemelil, Muhoroni, and Miwani. Farmers in the area also practice horticulture and livestock farming.
Agriculture CS Peter Munya on Monday had addressed the public saying that the desert locusts will be eliminated in a matter of time. He said the ministry has increased the sprayer aircraft from 8 to 10, to help control the locust infestation.
