Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa has been arrested after police raided his Karen home in Nairobi for questioning over claims of car fraud.
Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI) who had a search warrant impounded 5 cars from Echesa’s home, claiming that the ownership status of the cars needed to be established. The vehicles included a Range Rover, VW Passat, Toyota Land Cruiser and a Toyota Saloon car.
Echesa’a lawyer Brian Khaemba said his client was taken to the DCI headquarters following a complaint filed by a woman after the death of her husband who was said to be Echesa’s friend. According to the police affidavit, the complainant, Esther Kabura said her husband Patrick Akifuma died on March 14, 2016, and left his car with Echesa.
After the death of Kabura’s husband, she tried to get back the Land Cruiser that her husband had hired out to Echesa in vain.
It was later found out that the former CS had fraudulently transferred the ownership of the car to his name.
