President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed that all learning institutions in the country be closed following confirmation of two more coronavirus cases in Nairobi.
Primary and secondary schools to be closed on Monday, March 16, boarding schools have been given up to March 18, while universities and tertiary institutions to close by March 20.
Addressing the nation from his office at Harambee House, Uhuru urged government offices, businesses and companies to allow workers to work from home with the exception of those working in critical or essential services.
To avoid the risk of transmission through physical handling of money, President Uhuru has encouraged cashless transactions like mobile transfers, credit cards, and he appealed on mobile operators and banks to consider reducing the transaction costs.
Members of the public have also been urged to avoid congregating in places of worship as well as crowded places including shopping malls and entertainment premises. They have also been urged to minimize attendance to social gatherings including weddings and funerals.
